Joseph Mames Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Adolphe Bourgoyne and Marie Victorine Fryoux, was born between 1865-1867 in Louisiana, probably West Baton Rouge Parish.  There are conflicting records listing his year of birth.  The 1870 census of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana has "Mames", age 4, listed in the household with his widowed mother, Victorine Bourgogne.

On 29 December 1887, Joseph Mames Bourgoyne married Mary Estelle Lessard in Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

The next record I have of Mames is the 1910 census which shows him as head of household in Police Jury Ward 1, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  That record indicates that he and Estelle had been married 22 years and were the parents of 9 children, all living.  Six children remained in the home with Mames and Estelle at that time:  son Joseph, age 14, daughter Maude, age 13, daughter Katie, age 10, son Junius, age 8, daughter Clillian (Claylia), age 4, and daughter Volina, age 2.

Ten years later, the 1920 census shows that Mames and Estelle remained in Police Jury Ward 1, West Baton Rouge Parish.  Mames was a "cane farmer", meaning that he either produced sugar cane on his own land or that he worked in the sugar cane industry on one of the local sugar cane farms.  Their children listed on this census were Maud, Kate, Junius (or Junior), Claylia, Volina and Lolita, who was age 9.  Their daughter, Lolita, was born after the 1910 census which means that Mames and Estelle actually had 10 children.  Also listed separately in the same household on the 1920 census was Lily Tullier, age 30, widowed, and her daughter Eula May Tullier, age 9.  It is my opinion that Lily was their daughter as well.

Mary Estelle Lessard Bourgoyne died 05 February 1927.  The 1930 census indicates that Mames was then living with his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Louise Bourgoyne in Policy Jury Ward 6, Iberville Parish, Louisiana.  Joseph Mames Bourgoyne died 28 July 1935.  He was buried next to his wife in Brusly, Louisiana.

I am still trying to piece together information on the children of Joseph Mames Bourgoyne and Mary Estelle Lessard.  Thus far, this is the information I have:
i.    Lillian Bourgoyne, born about 1890, married a Tullier, widowed by 1920.
ii.   Lenora Bourgoyne, born about 1891, married George E. Comeaux.
iii.  Joseph Mames Bourgoyne Jr., born about 1896, married Louise Comeaux.
iv. Mary Maude Bourgoyne, born 24 March 1897 and died 04 January 1985 in Port Allen, West Baton Rouge, Louisiana; married Norman Richard Schlatre.
v.  Kate Bourgoyne, born about 1900.
vi.  Junius Bourgoyne, born about 1903, married H. Tircuit.
vii. Claylia Francis Bourgoyne, born 03 November 1904 and died 15 February 1986 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; married John Lewis Brown Sr.
viii. Volina Bourgoyne, born about 1908
ix.  Lolita Bourgoyne, born 26 September 1910 and died 15 May 1998 in Destin, Florida; married Samuel Joseph DeVillier.

If Mames and Estelle had a total of 10 children, then I am missing one of them.  If you have any information that could help me fill in some of these blanks, I would graciously appreciate your input.  Please contact me at susanbourgoyne@yahoo.com.  Thanks!!!

Daniel Bourgoyne

Daniel Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Adolphe Bourgoyne and Marie Victorine Fryoux, was born September 1865 in Louisiana, probably West Baton Rouge Parish.  On the 1870 census of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Daniel is listed as 6 years old, living in the household with his widowed mother, Victorine Bourgogne.  He was the fourth child born of six children listed.

Daniel Bourgoyne married Ada Templet on 15 December 1885 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  Ada was born in 1865, the daughter of Eugene and Celestine Marie Templet.  Ada's sister, Celeste Eugenie Templet, had married Daniel's brother, Theodore Adolphe Bourgoyne, five years earlier.

The next record I found of Daniel and his family is the 1900 census.  At that time, "Daniel Bourgoine" resided in Ward 6 of Iberville Parish, Louisiana.  The census listed him as 34 years old, born Sept 1865, and he was listed as widowed.  His children listed were:  son Frank, age 11, son Ed, age 8, daughter Clayora, age 6 and son Daniel Jr, age 2.  Also listed in Daniel's household was "Adilie Thumplet", sister-in-law, age 26, single and "Celestine Thumplet", mother-in-law, age 69, widowed.  Apparently, Daniel's wife Ada died between 1897 and 1900.  Did Ada die after giving childbirth to Daniel Jr?  Did Ada's sister, Adalie Templet, and her mother, Celestine Marie Templet, move in with Daniel to help him with the young children that were left without a mother?

The 1910 census taken in Police Jury Ward 8, Iberville Parish, Louisiana shows that Daniel remarried.  The census record indicates that 44 year old "Daniel Burgoyne" headed his household along with his wife of 10 years, Adalie, age 37.  It is reasonable to assume from comparing the 1900 and 1910 census that Daniel Bourgoyne married Adalie Templet, sister of his first wife, Ada Templet.  The children in their household were listed as:  daughter Clotilde, age 9, daughter Lizzie, age 6, daughter Annie, age 3 and son Jules, age 2.  The children of Daniel and Ada Templet are not listed in his household on this census.  They were probably living in the household of other relatives.  It is possible that by 1910 his sons Frank and Ed had established their own households since they would have been adults by then.

Ten years later the 1920 census of Police Jury Ward 8, Assumption Parish, Louisiana shows "Daniel Bourgon", age 60, was once again a widowed man.  Seven of his children resided with him including:  daughter Clayora, age 21, daughter Edna, age 20, daughter Clotile, age 17, son Jules, age 16, daughter Lizzie, age 12, daughter Annie, age 10, and son Oleus, age 6.   I am left to wonder about the daughter,  "Edna".  If "Edna" was 20 years old in 1920, why wasn't she listed on the 1900 census?  Could "Ed" from the 1900 census be the same person as "Edna" from the 1920 census and there was a mistake made when the information was written by the census taker?  I'm also left to wonder what happened to Daniel's second wife, Adalie.  Did she die from similar circumstances as her sister, Ada?

At present, I have no concrete records of Daniel Bourgoyne or his two wives.  I read a post on one of the Bourgoyne family message boards, written by someone who stated that Daniel Bourgoyne was her great-grandfather.  She reported that Daniel lived to be 103 years old and that near the end of his life, he resided in the Donaldsonville and White Castle area of Louisiana.  Thus far I have been unable to find Daniel on the 1930 or 1940 census records.  However, I haven't spent a lot of time searching through those records yet.  If anyone has further information on Daniel Bourgoyne and his family, please contact me- I would greatly appreciate any information, Thanks!

In summary, the information I have gathered on Daniel Bourgoyne and his family is as follows:

Daniel and his first wife, Ada, had the following children:
i.    Frank Michel Bourgoyne, born 11 March 1889 and died February 1965; married Anna Charlet
ii.   Edgar Bourgoyne (or possible Edna Bourgoyne), born 1892
iii.  Clayora Bourgoyne, born 1894
iv.  Daniel Bourgoyne Jr, born October 1897

Daniel and his second wife, Adalie, had the following children:
i.   Clothilde Celestine Bourgoyne, born 14 May 1901 and died 15 February 1991
ii.   Lizzie Bourgoyne, born 1904
iii.  Annie Bourgoyne, born 1907
iv.  Jules Bourgoyne, born 1908
v.   Oleus Bourgoyne, born 28 September 1910 and died 15 April 1994

I will update this information as further research progresses.

Onesime Bourgoyne

Onesime Bourgoyne

Onesime Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Adolphe Bourgoyne and Marie Victorine Fryoux, was born 08 March 1860 in Louisiana, probably West Baton Rouge Parish, and died 19 October 1927.  The first record I have of him shows he was 10 years old and living with his widowed mother, Victorine Bourgogne, on the 1870 census of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  He was the third child listed among six children.  The spelling of his name varies with records- Onesime and Onezime is used interchangeably.

On 17 July 1879, at the age of 19 years, Onesime married Odile Collette Tullier, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Tullier and Marie Estelle Landry.  Odile was about five years older than Onesime, born 06 March 1855.  The 1880 census taken in the 6th Ward of Iberville Parish, Louisiana shows Onesime, age 20,  heading his household with wife Odile, age 24, his stepdaughter Celeste Coumeau, age 2, and an adopted male, Louis Tullier, age 10 (this was possibly the brother of Odile).  According to other family group sheets, Onesime and Odile had three children together- Jules Vincent, born in 1881; John Louis, born in 1884; Joseph Frederick, born in 1887.

Since the 1890 census is unavailable, the next record I have of Onesime Bourgoyne is the 1900 census which shows him residing in Police Jury Ward 8, Iberville Parish, Lousiana.  The census shows "Onezime Bourgorgne", age 40 (born Mar 1860), as head of household with wife, Ernestine, age 20 (born Feb 1880), and their daughter, Ada, age 3 months (born Feb 1900).  The couple had been married for one year according to the record.  What became of Onesime's first wife, Odile?  Was she deceased, leaving him a widower, or had she remarried?  Where were the 3 sons from his first marriage living- they are not listed with him on the 1900 census.

I haven't yet found Onesime Bourgoyne on the 1910 census.  The 1920 census shows "Onezime Bourgogne"  remained in Policy Jury Ward 8, Iberville Parish.  However, by then he was listed as widowed with three children in his household- son Jim, age 15, daughter Victorine, age 13, and son Jessie, age 9.  Onesime and Ernestine's daughter, Ada, was possibly married by that time as she would have been about 20 years old.

According to the Louisiana statewide death index, Onezime Bourgoyne died on 19 October 1927 in Iberville Parish.  He was 67 years old at the time of his death.

I would appreciate more information on the children of Onesime Bourgoyne.  If you have additional information, please contact me.  Thanks!

Theodore Adolphe Bourgoyne

Theodore Adolphe Bourgoyne,
probably in his 70's

Theodore Adolphe Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Adolphe Bourgoyne and Marie Victorine Fryoux, was born 27 May 1856 in Louisiana, probably in West Baton Rouge Parish.  On the 1870 census of West Baton Rouge Parish, he was listed as 14 years old and living in the household with his widowed mother, Victorine Bourgogne.  He was the eldest of six known children.  Theodore married Celeste Eugenie Templet, the daughter of Eugene and Celestine Marie Templet, on 15 January 1880 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.   She was born 14 July 1857 in West Baton Rouge Parish.

Though I have not found Theodore and his wife on the 1880 census, I did locate them on the 1900 census, Ward 1, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  The record shows Theodore heading his household with wife Celeste and their eight children- Willie, Eugenie, Valier, Mary, Francis, Emile, Lesia and Adam.

At some point between 1900 and 1920, Theodore and his family relocated from West Baton Rouge Parish to Iberville Parish.  The 1920 census finds Theodore Bourgoyne heading his household in Police Jury Ward 8 of Iberville Parish, Louisiana.  The record listed his wife, Eugenie, along with son Adam and daughter-in-law Albertine.   During the early 1900's, Theodore and his family operated a meat market in Plaquemine, therefore, they probably lived close to town due to commuting back and forth to the market.

Theodore took an interest in
reading the local newspaper

In 1930, the census shows that Theodore and his wife Eugenie remained in the same location of Iberville Parish as this is where they owned their home.  Adam and his wife Albertine continued living in the same home with Theodore but by 1930, the young couple had three children which are shown on the census- Curtis, Margaret and Earl.  In that era, it was common for aging parents to have children and grandchildren in their home.  Theodore and his wife were both in their 70's at that time.

Theodore died on 18 June 1936 in Iberville Parish, Louisiana.  The following year, his wife passed away, on 18 March 1937.

Marcel Forestin Bourgoyne

Marcel Forestin Bourgoyne, son of Jules Francois Bourgoyne and Cecile Adelaide Tullier, was born 16 January 1834.  He was christened in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana on 10 April 1834.  He married Marie Irma Comeaux, the daughter of Firmin Coumeaux and Marie Emma Frioux, on 28 May 1855 in Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  She was born 28 March 1840 and christened on 12 October 1840 in East Baton Rouge Parish.  I have seen Marcel Forestin Bourgoyne also listed as "Florestin" on other family records.  I'm not sure which one is most accurate.

According to family history databases, it appears that Forestin died at the young age of 23 years and was buried on 12 May 1857 in Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  Only a few days later, on 16 May 1857, Forestin's young wife was laid to rest in the same location.  She was only 17 years old.

I wonder what circumstances took the lives of a couple so young?  Was it yellow fever or malaria?  Those were just a couple of deadly diseases that claimed the lives of many in that era.  Did Forestin and his wife have any children?  Since they married and died between the census decades, they are not found in census records.

Theophile Bourgoyne

Theophile Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Francois Bourgoyne and Cecile Adelaide Tullier, was born 09 October 1827 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  He married Roseanna Frioux, the daughter of Jean Baptist Frioux and Marceline Magdalaine Prosper, on 28 March 1853 in Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish. She was born 19 May 1832 in West Baton Rouge Parish.

Their known children were:

i.  Adolphe Bourgoyne, born 22 April 1856 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana; married Antoinette Eulalie Broussard on 22 January 1879 in WBR Parish, daughter of Joseph Onesime Broussard and Elmira Severine Tullier.  She was born 10 February 1861 in WBR Parish.  They had two known sons- Joseph Theophile and Eustache.
ii.  Marceline Cecile Bourgoyne, born 1859.  No further info.

Juliene Pourpore Bourgoyne

Juliene Pourpore Bourgoyne, the eldest child and daughter of Jules Francois Bourgoyne and Cecile Adelaide Tullier, was born 25 May 1825 in Louisiana.  She married Faustin Sosthenes LeBlanc on 18 July 1842 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  Faustin was born 15 February 1818, the son of Paul LeBlanc and Delaide Melancon.  I'm curious about Juliene's middle name- Pourpore.  Was that her actual middle name, and what is the origin of it?  Research confirms that Pourpore is also used as a surname- did some of her ancestors have the surname Pourpore?

The 1850 census of West Baton Rouge Parish shows Juliene and her children in the household of her husband, Faustin LeBlanc.  That is the only record to date that I have of this family.  Juliene died 02 September 1853 in Brusly so she isn't seen on any further census records.

Juliene and Faustin had the following children, to my knowledge:

i.  Adelaine Hermine Leblanc, born 1843.  She married Dorval Tullier on 24 September 1860 in Brusly, West Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  He was born 27 February 1839 and died 09 December 1931.  They had 5 sons:  Simon, Edmay, Elzert, Benjamin John "Jack", and Emile.  Adelaine and Dorval Tullier resided in Sardine Point- see house #8 on Sardine Point illustrations.
ii.  Jules Augustin Leblanc, born 13 October 1845 in Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  He married Adelaide Dauphine ________ (last name unknown).  They had 6 children:  Sons- Julien, Pascal, Francois and Arestide and Daughters Eugenie and Julia.
iii.  Adam Adolphe LeBlanc, born 27 January 1848 in West Baton Rouge Parish and died in 1911.  He married Mary Elizabeth Hernandez on 03 November 1884.  She was born 06 February 1864 and died 01 April 1960 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  They had the following children:  Sons- Leo and Richard Boyd and Daughters- Alice, Camille, Thelma and Elmina Anna.
iv.  Marie Victoria LeBlanc, born 31 March 1850 in West Baton Rouge Parish and died 05 February 1927 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.  She married Euzebie Tullier.  He was born 17 October 1846 in Sardine Point, West Baton Rouge Parish and died 1915.  Their children were:  Sons- Armand, Paul and Isadore Joseph; Daughters- Camille, Mathilde, Elvira and Julie Ann.
v.  Edgard LeBlanc, born 25 February 1852 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  No further info.
