Onesime Bourgoyne

Onesime Bourgoyne

Onesime Bourgoyne, the son of Jules Adolphe Bourgoyne and Marie Victorine Fryoux, was born 08 March 1860 in Louisiana, probably West Baton Rouge Parish, and died 19 October 1927.  The first record I have of him shows he was 10 years old and living with his widowed mother, Victorine Bourgogne, on the 1870 census of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.  He was the third child listed among six children.  The spelling of his name varies with records- Onesime and Onezime is used interchangeably.

On 17 July 1879, at the age of 19 years, Onesime married Odile Collette Tullier, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Tullier and Marie Estelle Landry.  Odile was about five years older than Onesime, born 06 March 1855.  The 1880 census taken in the 6th Ward of Iberville Parish, Louisiana shows Onesime, age 20,  heading his household with wife Odile, age 24, his stepdaughter Celeste Coumeau, age 2, and an adopted male, Louis Tullier, age 10 (this was possibly the brother of Odile).  According to other family group sheets, Onesime and Odile had three children together- Jules Vincent, born in 1881; John Louis, born in 1884; Joseph Frederick, born in 1887.

Since the 1890 census is unavailable, the next record I have of Onesime Bourgoyne is the 1900 census which shows him residing in Police Jury Ward 8, Iberville Parish, Lousiana.  The census shows "Onezime Bourgorgne", age 40 (born Mar 1860), as head of household with wife, Ernestine, age 20 (born Feb 1880), and their daughter, Ada, age 3 months (born Feb 1900).  The couple had been married for one year according to the record.  What became of Onesime's first wife, Odile?  Was she deceased, leaving him a widower, or had she remarried?  Where were the 3 sons from his first marriage living- they are not listed with him on the 1900 census.

I haven't yet found Onesime Bourgoyne on the 1910 census.  The 1920 census shows "Onezime Bourgogne"  remained in Policy Jury Ward 8, Iberville Parish.  However, by then he was listed as widowed with three children in his household- son Jim, age 15, daughter Victorine, age 13, and son Jessie, age 9.  Onesime and Ernestine's daughter, Ada, was possibly married by that time as she would have been about 20 years old.

According to the Louisiana statewide death index, Onezime Bourgoyne died on 19 October 1927 in Iberville Parish.  He was 67 years old at the time of his death.

I would appreciate more information on the children of Onesime Bourgoyne.  If you have additional information, please contact me.  Thanks!
